Dr Yiota Karagianni is currently Associate professor in ‘Inclusive Education’ at the School of Primary Education of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

She has graduated from the University of Ioannina (Greece). She has an MA in Learning Disabilities from the University of Birmingham (UK) and a PhD in Disability and Education from the University of Athens (Greece).

She has taught education, inclusive education, curriculum & disability, education policy & disability and research methodology at undergraduate and masters’ levels. She has led and contributed to a number of undergraduate modules: a) Inclusive Education, b) Disability and education, c) Qualitative research, ethnography, discourse analysis, d) Disability studies, gender studies, antiracist education, e) Education and social justice, and f) Displacement & emplacement in education. She supervises undergraduate, master and doctoral students in the areas of: a) Critical disability studies, b) Critical education & disability studies and c) Inclusive education.

Her research encompasses a number of theoretical and political engagements. She is interested in social and educational policy and in theorising and challenging the conditions of disablism/ableism (the social, political and cultural exclusion of people with physical, sensory and/or cognitive impairments). She is engaged with postmarxist and poststructuralist accounts of exclusion and political resistance. She is working with colleagues in the School of Primary Education to explore the exclusion of disabled children in Greece and in particular the lifelong learning of the disabled Roma people.
